Easy access threshold for fire doors

A sealing placed at the bottom edge of a door with no threshold makes the door fireproof but still easy to open and go through. The invention replaces a conventional threshold, which is difficult for persons with reduced mobility to pass over, even when it is only 2 cm high. The invention is in fact a fire door with no threshold at all: there is only a flat floor surface under the door.

The invention is easy to install both in new doors at the factory, and when doors that are already in use are being repaired. It is very inexpensive to install and use the construction, as it does not need any external source of energy. When doors already in use are being repaired, the construction can be installed on site. The company applied for a patent for the invention in spring 2007.

In summer 2007, the door with no threshold was first taken into use in Kivipuro, a rehabilitation centre for the elderly in Seinäjoki, and has received excellent feedback.

Erikoistyö Mäki Ky, founded in 1985, is a craft-oriented family business. At the beginning of the 21st century, the company came up with solutions for barrier-free living when they planned their parents’ house. The company’s other lines of businesses include restoration and landscaping. Continuous product development is vital for the company’s activities. As a result, Erkki Mäki has been granted several patents.
